CHEMISTRY LESSONS AT WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN SKIRSNEMUNĖ TOWN

2015-11-17
On 11 November 2015 pupils from the Skirsnemunė Jurgis Baltrušaitis Basic School of the Jurbarkas District visited the waste water treatment plant in Skirsnemunė for the first time. The waste water treatment plant was equipped during the implementation of the Large Scale Project No ILPR.01.01.01-72-001/10-00 „Ecological improvement of the river Neman – construction of waste water collection and treatment infrastructure in Skirsnemunė town in Jurbarkas district (Lithuania) and in Neman city (Russia)“.

During the excursion the topic of the lesson „Waste water gathering and treatment“ was discussed and explanation given on general chain of waste water treatment. The operator explained how the waste water gets into the waste water treatment equipment, also showed and clarified the processes of mechanical and biological treatment. Aeration of the sludge and the results of the whole process starting from the waste water and getting to pure water was especially interesting for the students. The students also learnt that clean water is being checked sistematically at the laboratory for the remaining chemical elements after the treatment, which satisfies the requirements of the European Union. In general, the students were mostly interested in the aeration process of the sludge and the computer-assisted management system of the waste water treatment equipment.

Besides theoretical learning from books, the students had a great opportunity to learn chemistry in real life at the waste water treatment plant in Skirsnemunė. Therefore it was decided that every year the pupils will be taken to the waste water treatment plant in Skirsnemunė in order to learn the trail of the waste water treatment.
